SPASH Hybrid Block Definitions
The SPASH daily schedule is a “hybrid” schedule in that it contains and combines elements of a traditional seven period day with elements of a block schedule. Here are the main components of our daily schedule:
Hybrid Block Schedule
A “hybrid block schedule” is a weekly schedule that contains some traditional seven-period days along with days that contain longer “block” class periods for extended learning and activities. Block days also contain dedicated time for independent student personal learning (PLT), Advisory, and Panther Clubs and Activities.
Class Period
Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays consist of seven class periods (plus lunch hours). The school day is divided into seven class periods which are 52 minutes long.
Class Block
Wednesdays and Thursdays are “block days” and utilize longer class periods to provide increased instructional time for deeper learning as well as lab and other classroom learning activities.
Personal Learning Time (PLT): Intervention, Enrichment, and Individual Teacher Support
Personal Learning Time (PLT) is time first and foremost dedicated to providing students with access to all teachers. All teachers will be in their classrooms during this time for intervention, enrichment, and individual student support. We will use the FlexiSched software to schedule students and document attendance for this block. Teachers may also request or require that students meet with them during this flexible time period. Students with incomplete work or low grades will also be assigned to specific classrooms/teachers for support and attendance will be taken. Students demonstrating proficient academic habits will choose what to work on during this time. Annually approximately 75% of SPASH students enroll in some type of two or four year college; it’s important to provide students with aspects of choice and time management in their daily schedule.
Advisory
SPASH Advisory is our system for delivering Academic and Career Planning (ACP) as required by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. ACP is a student-driven, adult supported process in which students explore their own visions and aspirations for post-secondary success through career exploration and the development of career management and planning skills. Students will have the same advisor and advisory section for all three years at SPASH.
Teacher PLCs and Instructional Teams (PLCs)
Another important element of our hybrid block schedule is weekly, systemic dedicated time for teachers to meet as professional learning communities (PLCs) and instructional/departmental teams. These meetings are intended to focus teacher planning on collaborative and data-informed instruction to improve student achievement. PLCs serve as a primary component of our school’s continuous improvement plan. SPASH PLCs and teams will meet on Wednesday from 7:35 AM - 8:25 AM. Students may choose to be in the building during this time and can use the library or commons areas for studying.
