Student Health Assistant Program
SPASH has offered its students a role in the Health Office for more than 20 years. The Health Assistant Program has gone through many changes and requirements throughout this time. Since 2017, the program has been offered to interested students who exhibit good academic standing, adequate attendance, friendly personalities, and ideally a desire to pursue a career in the medical field. Under the supervision of the onsite school nurse, SPASH Health Assistants are responsible for greeting/checking-in students to the Health Office, documenting office visits accurately, providing minor first aid, cleaning/disinfecting of the space, and helping the nurse to attend to students’ health/medical needs. Being a health assistant can be a great learning experience and resume-builder for future college and professional endeavors. Students earn 0.5 credits per semester for volunteering one class period a day in this role. The specific assigned class period is determined by school counselors/schedulers prior to the beginning of the school year in the fall. New Health Assistant training is held in late August of each year.
