Building a Resume

Why do I need an academic/workforce resume? 

You will need an academic resume to share with teachers in order for them to write you a letter of recommendation. You will also need it to apply for scholarships. 

If you plan to enter the workforce, your future employer may request a resume. 

How do I create a resume? 

Use a Google template. Open up a new document and click the drop down next to the template gallery. Make sure to save this to your personal email, so you have access to it after you graduate.

What do I list on a resume? See the sample attachment below.

 NOTE: Your academic career began in September of your Freshman year. If you feel you don’t have much to list, this gives you the chance to add experiences ahead of senior year.

• Work Experience (list most recent first)
• Extra Curricular Activities
• Community Service 
• Awards & Achievements
• Optional: Skills, Hobbies

What if I have questions or need help when creating my resume? 

You can go to the Career Center anytime during your school day for assistance with your resume.  The Career Center is next to the library.

• Students seeking employment can visit the Career Center for more information.
• In March SPASH hosts a College and Career Fair and any local businesses are present and looking for future employees.  For seniors this is a great opportunity to bring a resume and talk to businesses about job openings..
• Each spring Boys and Girls club hosts a job fair that has businesses that are looking for summer workers.

All work permits are completed online. Youth under the age of 16 are required to obtain a Work Permit.  Please access the site using the link below. Payment is made directly to the department through the application, using a credit or debit card or by ACH direct withdrawal. Once the permit application process is complete, the Department mails a paper copy of the permit directly to the employer.
